Security System FAQs

How do I know what sort of security camera is required?

Here are a few things to consider when choosing cameras.

  • How many cameras do you need?
  • What viewing angle is required by each camera?
  • What lighting conditions are present?
  • What vandal and weather proof types to consider?
  • What quality of image is required?
  • Do you want to be able to move the camera from a remote location?

How many security cameras do I need?

The number of cameras is usually determined by what exactly you would like to cover. Typical areas include main entry and exit doors, potentially hazardous areas and areas that have significant value. Covering areas of main access such as vehicle traffic, pedestrians and high volume customers (eg: for retail stores) can enable you to assess the person or object of interest on arrival, and again on departure.

How do I choose a viewing angle for my security camera?

A very important choice to make is how wide or narrow to make the view of the camera. A wide angle is great to see something is actually there, approaching or lingering around, but gives you very little detail. Narrowing the view by zooming in will give you more detail, but may limit the amount of general viewing. This consideration may determine the number of cameras you require.

Will my security cameras work at night?

Do you need this camera at night? If so, using a camera with IR (Infra Red) allows viewing areas in complete darkness by emitting an infra red light not seen by our eyes but detected by the camera. Note, night viewing cameras are limited to black and white and standard cameras will view only around 20 – 30 meters. Consider other lighting options such as motion detection lighting so you can achieve a reasonable picture with a low light camera.

How do I stop vandals from damaging my security cameras?

If the camera is outside and easily accessible it becomes a target for vandals. A vandal proof camera usually has a solid metal encasement protecting the camera from attack.

Are security cameras weather proof?

Consider the exposure of the camera to weather and determine which camera can be used to stop water and sunlight damage.

What’s the best quality security camera?

The quality of a camera normally is determined by how much detail is required and under what conditions: low light, high contrast areas, the resolution of the camera.

What lenses do I need in my security cameras?

Mid to high end cameras require specific lenses to suit the camera and can make a considerable difference. An indoor camera requires a wide angle lens as the camera is close to the viewing area, whereas a camera 200 meters away from a gate, requiring to only view the gate, requires significant zoom ability. This is determined by the lens size.

What is a PTZ camera?

A PTZ camera is able to Pan, Tilt and Zoom. This is a camera that you can control remotely to move left, right, up and down as well as zoom in and out, giving you the ability to zoom in on specific areas of interest. A PTZ camera in daylight can generally be up to 200 meters away from a car to zoom in to read the number plate.

Can I hide my security cameras?

Covert cameras can come in the form of a clock on the wall to a smoke detector on the ceiling. Brisbane CCTV has a range of options to suit your particular needs.

How do I monitor security on an entire construction site?

By placing a camera on an opposing building to view the entire construction, you can then convert the images to a web site allowing investors to check the progressing of their investment.

With worldwide ability to view the construction it’s a great form of advertising.

Digital Video Recorders

How to select a Digital Video Recorder (DVR)

DVR Pacom

DVR’s generally come in 4 channel, 8 or 9 channel and 16 channel. A channel is where the camera is plugged into, allowing recording and viewing. Which DVR to select is determined by how many cameras you think you require to cover your property. If you have a 4 Channel this means you can have a maximum of 4 cameras plugged in and recording. You do not need to have every channel working – consider keeping some channels for future expansion.

How long does a DVR store recordings?

DVR Recordings are made onto a hard drive and typically stored for around 5 to 30 days depending on the quality and resolution set in the recorder. After the predetermined time, the last recording will be replaced by the newer one (recording over it). You can generally archive or store any video on a USB stick or DVD ROM to be viewed on another computer. The time and date is entered into the DVR. One important system function is IPS (Images Per Second). The IPS determines how jumpy the video is going to appear on the recordings. Systems typically come in 100, 200 and 400 IPS – the higher the number the more IPS the DVR will be able to record and view live.

Can I make Time Lapse Recordings?

By placing a camera on an opposing building you have the ability to view the entire construction site. Recording the construction site from one fixed position over the entire construction stage allows you to put a series of images together to make a short clip from start to finish. This can be great for presentations and selling points for future constructions.
